Session 4: Building Management System Best Practices in GMP Facility

3:00 PM – 3:45 PM | East Red Level, Suite 10

Building Management Systems (BMS) are generally overlooked in the grand scheme of constructing a GMP Facility, with other automated systems in the building getting the majority of attention. Nevertheless, a building management system is mainly responsible for maintaining pressurization and temperature conditions within GMP areas as well as the operation of the overall facility. When a drug manufacturer can quickly bring a product to market, they can reach more patients and effect their lives much more quickly. When they do that by delivering a new facility on time and on budget, it can be life-changing for many. The panel will discuss how to best design, install, and commission a building management system in a complex GMP facility so that a drug manufacturer can bring products to market more quickly. Drawing on success stories and case studies from the field, the panel will provide best practices to consider when building a new GMP facility. System Design: discussion about the important aspects of the BAS system design and what to think about before construction begins. Team Selection: a conversation on best practices for selecting members of the construction and subcontractor teams. Project Delivery: best practices from start to finish (engineering, installation, and commissioning) that help define the success of a project.

Panelists:

Milton Chan, Engineering and Quality Manager, Albireo Energy
Aaron Conant, Senior Director, Engineering and Capital Projects, Alnylam
Mike Denietolis, Project Engineer, Albireo Energy
Mike Good, BMS Commissioning Specialist, CAI
John Kelliher, Associate Director, Plant Engineering, Alnylam
Jason Theberge, Vice President, Commodore Builders

Moderator:  Dave Gallagher, Account Manager, Albireo Energy

Milton Chan is an engineering manager at Albireo Energy, where he is responsible for project engineering estimating, scope development, and fundamental design for turnkey projects. He manages the team that works on hardware and software design submittals, installation drawings, engineering documentation, sequence of operations, and graphics design. He has been with an Albireo company for nearly a decade, and previously worked in the biotech industry at Sanofi Genzyme.

Aaron Conant leads the Engineering and Capital Projects departments at Alnylam Pharmaceuticals.  After graduating from the University of Maine with a bachelor’s in chemical engineering, he spent the first 10 years of his career in the Pulp and Paper industry before transitioning to Biotech for the past 21 years, working for Biogen, Amgen and now Alnylam.  He has been part of many fast-paced projects from system renovation to greenfield installations in the Automation space, across GMP and non-GMP facilities.

Mike Denietolis has dedicated himself to a meaningful career in engineering, beginning with two years of apprenticeship at a Utility Engineering firm. He then became an electrical foreman and shortly thereafter began working in the security and low voltage fields, showing immense skill in creating control schemes for door interlocks and trouble shooting wiring for Residential HVAC applications. With his wealth of knowledge, Mike then rose to the challenge of becoming a lead installer at Guardian EMS, successfully installing systems for BCM, AEM, Automated Logic and Huntington Controls. Now, as a Project Engineer at Albireo Energy, Mike works towards utilizing his experience to deliver solutions to issues hindering project completion.
